DAY 26: Mark 13.3-33

Later, Jesus sat on the Mount of Olives across the valley from the Temple. Peter, James, John, and Andrew came to him privately and asked him, “Tell us, when will all this happen? What sign will show us that these things are about to be fulfilled?” Jesus replied, “Don’t let anyone mislead you, for many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah.’ They will deceive many.

Just because someone claims that they are a prophet, a spiritual guru, the person who we should listen to and follow, it doesn’t mean we should just automatically believe them. Many people might be convinced by them but don’t follow the crowd. Think for yourself and look at what the Bible teaches and only trust those leaders who follow the teachings of the Bible.

And you will hear of wars and threats of wars, but don’t panic. Yes, these things must take place, but the end won’t follow immediately. Nation will go to war against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in many parts of the world, as well as famines. But this is only the first of the birth pains, with more to come. “When these things begin to happen, watch out! You will be handed over to the local councils and beaten in the synagogues. You will stand trial before governors and kings because you are my followers. But this will be your opportunity to tell them about me.

Jesus is a great teacher, but here we see that He is far more than that. In these verses He talked about some of the things that will happen in the future. Jesus never taught that following Him would be easy! In fact He taught the opposite. He explained that people would not like His followers and that those in charge would take them to court and to prison and physically hurt them for being a Christian. We shouldn’t be surprised if Christians have troubles in this life but look for opportunities to use these troubles to tell others about Jesus!

“Then if anyone tells you, ‘Look, here is the Messiah,’ or ‘There he is,’ don’t believe it. For false messiahs and false prophets will rise up and perform signs and wonders so as to deceive, if possible, even God’s chosen ones. Watch out! I have warned you about this ahead of time!”

We need to be careful who we listen to. Just because someone says this is what Jesus is like, or this is what He did, doesn’t mean they are telling the truth. The only way we know that a church or group or person is following the real Jesus is if they are following what the Bible says about Him. Many religions have someone called Jesus as part of their religion, but we need to only follow the Jesus who died on a cross for us, the Jesus who is God offering us a free undeserved gift of forgiveness.

“At that time, after the anguish of those days, the sun will be darkened, the moon will give no light, the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken.” Then everyone will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds with great power and glory. And he will send out his angels to gather his chosen ones from all over the world – from the farthest ends of the earth and heaven.

At the very end of the world Jesus, the Son of Man, will come back to the earth as a King and Ruler. The first time Jesus came to this earth He was here as a servant and rescuer but this next time He will come with great power and glory! When He comes He will save and rescue those that have chosen to follow Him. There will be people that have become Christians (Christ followers) from all over the world! When this part of the Bible was written there were only a few believers and they were all in the middle east, but Jesus knew that people would follow Him from all over the world. Jesus knows about the future, He knows about your future, He knew that you would have an opportunity to follow Him in your country. There will come a time in the future when He will gather together everybody in your country who believes in Him. Will you be one of them?

“no one knows the day or hour when these things will happen, not even the angels in heaven or the Son himself. Only the Father knows. And since you don’t know when that time will come, be on guard! Stay alert!”

We know that one day the end of the world will happen, it is something that God has promised. But we don’t know when the end of the world will be. Jesus wants us all to live a life that is always ready and waiting for His return, knowing that the comforts and struggles we have in this world are just for a while.

Prayer suggestions:

  • Ask Jesus to help you to not to be influenced by people that teach false things about Him
  • Ask Jesus to help you to cope with people being unkind to you because of what you believe
  • Ask Jesus to help you to live your life as if He was going to return to this earth today
