Going to church doesn’t save us, but we are called by God to meet together as believers. The temptation for many is to use the resources that are found online or elsewhere but not become part of a church. Church is where true worship as a community of believers occurs. It is where we can grow and be helped in a way that is different to what any individual friend can deliver.
The Bible’s original Greek word for church is translated as gathering or assembly. The idea being that followers of Jesus would gather to live in fellowship with one another. They would be united by Jesus, study God’s word, love one another, encourage each other through difficult times, help each other grow closer to Jesus and live as a Christian family.
All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord’s Supper), and to prayer. (Acts 2.42)
As we grow closer to Jesus, we should develop a desire to worship God, listento people teaching His Word, and fellowship with other believers. This is not just a nice suggestion but something the Bible tells us God wants us to do.
let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near. (Hebrews 10.25)
We encourage you to find a good Bible-teaching church. Look at what they believe about Jesus and the Bible and visit them a few times to experience what they are about. Don’t decide on a church just because they offer the best coffee or best music or have the nicest building. There is nothing wrong with those things, but they are not the main focus. Look for a place where you can become part of a loving spiritual family that will help you to grow closer to God and worship Him well.
Honour the Lord for the glory of his name. Worship the Lord in the splendour of his holiness. (Psalms 29.2)
Just as our bodies have many parts and each part has a special function, so it is with Christ’s body. We are many parts of one body, and we all belong to each other. In his grace, God has given us different gifts for doing certain things well. So if God has given you the ability to prophesy, speak out with as much faith as God has given you. If your gift is serving others, serve them well. If you are a teacher, teach well. If your gift is to encourage others, be encouraging. If it is giving, give generously. If God has given you leadership ability, take the responsibility seriously. And if you have a gift for showing kindness to others, do it gladly. (Romans 12.4-8)
- Ask Jesus to help you find a church that teaches the truth about Him from the Bible
- Ask God to help you to find a church that feels like being part of a family where you can grow and learn
- Thank God that you don’t have to feel alone because He places us in churches so we feel loved and cared for and so we can love and care for others
